Welcome.
For over two hundred years, Virginia’s Capitol Square has served as a central site and symbol of civic life in Virginia. Currently, the Square displays memorials to Revolutionary leaders, figures from the Civil War era, and to 20th-century Virginia political leader Harry Flood Byrd, Sr. In 2005, the Governor and the General Assembly jointly established the Civil Rights Memorial Commission; its job is to select an additional monument for the Square dedicated to what was one of the most significant historical events of the last century – the struggle for full civil rights for Virginia’s African-American citizens.
- For details about the planned memorial, please go to our Memorial page.
- To learn about Stanley Bleifeld, the artist selected to create the statue, see our Artist pages.
